When temperatures drop, Valencians swap the beach for the mountains, shared meals, and gentle strolls for nature and charming inland villages. Here are some of our favourites: <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1) Enjoying a cal\u00e7otada (and where to eat cal\u00e7ots)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><strong>cal\u00e7otada<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the winter\u2019s culinary highlights. Although it originates from <\/span><strong>Valls (Tarragona)<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the tradition has spread strongly to the Valencian Community. It involves roasting <\/span><strong>cal\u00e7ots<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a type of tender spring onion) directly over vine cuttings or wood fire. They are eaten with your hands, peeling off the burnt outer layer and dipping them in <\/span><strong>romesco or salvitxada sauce.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The ritual is usually completed with grilled meat, bread, wine or cava.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What to do:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather with friends or family around the fire, roast the cal\u00e7ots, and enjoy a long, leisurely meal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How \/ where:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><strong>country houses or chalets inland<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dalencia, it\u2019s very common for families and friends to organise homemade cal\u00e7otadas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this isn\u2019t an option, or you prefer a restaurant, some local <\/span><strong>restaurants<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offer cal\u00e7otada menus between January and March. These are usually places specialising in traditional cuisine or grilled dishes. Some of our favourites include: <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Taula de Paula in Valencia city<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bergamonte in Pobla de Farnals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asador Mayor in Manises<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>2) Skiing in Valdelinares<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Valencians, <\/span><strong>Valdelinares<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the closest snow getaway. Located in the province of Teruel, it is the nearest ski resort to Valencia, just an hour and a half by car. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What to do:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alpine skiing, snowboarding, sledging for children, and enjoying the mountain atmosphere. It\u2019s ideal for beginners and families alike. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How to get there:<\/strong> <strong>about 1.5 hours by car<\/strong> from Valencia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, passing through Teruel. It\u2019s a typical day trip or weekend escape. If you don\u2019t have a car, buses run from Valencia throughout the season, with tickets covering the round trip. You can also add ski passes, equipment rental, and lessons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it\u2019s popular:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proximity, more affordable prices, and the chance to see snow and ski without a long journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3) Skiing in the Pyrenees<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we have more time or are after longer slopes and spectacular scenery, many Valencians head for the<\/span> <strong>Pyrenees<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What to do:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alpine skiing and snowboarding at resorts such as Andorra, Baqueira-Beret, Formigal or Cerler. Beyond skiing, you can enjoy mountain villages, hearty local cuisine, and apr\u00e8s-ski. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to get there:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By car, it\u2019s a long journey (6 hours or more, depending on the destination).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t have a car, you can try Blablacar, or combine train to Lleida or Barcelona with a bus. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When to go:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the season usually runs from December until the end of March, sometimes April, depending on snow conditions. The most dedicated Valencian skiers often escape for the weekend whenever the forecast is good, making the most of every minute on the slopes. For a fuller experience, several days are recommended. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4) Visiting charming inland villages<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In winter, many Valencians take the chance to explore<\/span> <strong>historic villages in the mountains<\/strong> and enjoy traditional mountain cuisine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to do:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stroll through historic centres, enjoy hearty dishes (stews, Manchego gazpacho, cured meats and grilled meat), visit castles, and soak up the rural atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Our seven favourite villages: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morella, Bocairent, Guadalest, Culla, Albarrac\u00edn, Rubielos de Mora, Mora de Rubielos (and yes, that\u2019s not a joke\u2014they really are called that!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to get there:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by car, journeys take between 1 and 2 hours from Valencia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Origin:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a tradition linked to rural tourism and the search for cold weather, fireplaces, and hearty inland cuisine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5) Christmas in Valencia<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the festive season, the city fills with lights and Christmas markets.
