Art is subtly and uniquely present in Vortex coworking spaces like an unseen magic that inspires all of us around. Perhaps this is because each space has a historical connection to great Valencian artists:
- Vortex Centro was once home to the amazing Maestro Rodrigo (1901–1999) when he was a child. In his honor, we have a piano at the coworking entrance. Find more info about his history in this other blog!
- Vortex Ciencias, is located on a street named after an important Valencian painter: Julio Peris Brell (1866–1944). Would you like to learn more about him? Scroll down!
Julio Peris Brell was a prominent figure during the golden age of Valencian painting, which spanned from late 19th century and to early 20th century. He was a devoted follower of Joaquín Sorolla´s luminism, and he often visited his studio in Madrid, where he absorbed much of the master’s style before adapting it into his own artistic vision.
Peris Brell trained at the Valencia School of Fine Arts and was closely connected to the artistic and literary circles of his time. He mingled with renowned artists such as Pinazo, Baroja, Ricardo Verde, Agrasot, and Benlliure, participating in numerous exhibitions and cultural activities in Valencia. His contributions were recognized by institutions such as the Círculo de Bellas Artes, the Ateneo Científico, Literario y Artístico, the Imperium Gallery, the magazine Letras y Figuras, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos, where he was named an academic member in 1928.
Peris Brell had a deep appreciation for simple, everyday life, which is reflected in his paintings of Valencia’s most traditional scenes. He captured the city’s essence through natural landscapes, the open countryside, the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, local gardens, the coastline and its small villages, the city during festivals, and beachside leisure at the turn of the century. His works masterfully depict changing light, airy atmospheres, fleeting moments, and the dynamic movement of Mediterranean life. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he was not known for bold colors, as typically happens in the valencian landscape painting, influenced by the misty coastal light that softened and grayed distant hues. Instead, he excelled in using light as a visual tool, often manipulating it expressively to create a modern aesthetic.

Peris Brell belonged to the generation of painters who followed Sorolla, continuing his artistic innovations while developing his own distinctive style. Although he was one of the most notable mediterranean artists, his work has not always received the recognition it deserves, nor has it been widely exhibited in museums and galleries.
